SOME OF THE PLACES TO SEE IN PORBANDAR DISTRICT.
Porbandar district is full of beautiful places. Inside
the city there is a birth place of mahatma Gandhi, the Kirti Mandir,Sudama temple,Chowpati
(beach), Rokadia Hanuman temple, Gayatri temple, Shanti kutir, Bharat Mandir,Tara
Mandir and so many other places. Outside the city there is a mountain called Barda
Dungar just 20 km away from Porbandar city . In the mountain there is water falls
near the town Kileshwar surrounded by beautiful scenery On the west cost of Porbandar
sea around 20 km there is Harsiddhi Mata's temple and if you travel towards Advana
then there is a Randal Matajis Mandir near village Bagavadar, 18 km from Porbandar.

there. Porbandar city is connected
by air,rail,sea and road with other cities of Gujarat state and rest of the India.
Air service is operated by jet air from Mumbai. There is a daily flight to Porbandar,
leaving Mumbai at 11: 30 Am arriving Porbandar
at 1: 15 PM via Div, leaving Porbandar at 1:30 PM arriving Mumbai at 3 PM. Tickets
prices are around 3800 Indian rupees one-way. Also train leaves for Mumbai everyday
and back from Mumbai Local s.t.busses and luxury coaches are available too.
Staying
in Porbandar. Staying in Porbandar is not
a problem now days as there is lots of hotels available in the city. Prices for
hotels are very reasonable starting from 200 rupees to 2000 rupees a night. For

to eat. Eating out in Porbandar is not a problem specially if you
are a vegetarian. There are lots of restaurants in Porbandar City most of them
are vegetarian, not too many restaurants cook meat but there are one or two who
are specialist in meat. Swagat is the one name in vegetarian, Swagat is a very
popular in Punjabi and South Indian dishes you can find this on M.G.Road and also
Aadarsh who are based on the same road. Aadarsh is very good too as you get the
value for your money.
Kirti Mandir
This memorial to Gandhi was built in 1950. There's a small
bookshop and an exhibition of photographs, some with English captions. Next door
is Gandhi's actual birthplace - a three storey, 300 year-old house. A swastika
marks the spot where the great man was born on 2 October, 1869. Entrance is free.
Festivals Of Porbandar District.
Porbandar district is
full of colourful people and so many different castes. Porbandar melo takes place
in the city near sea side and it attracts thousands of people every year. Melo
(fair) entertains everyone young and old rich and poor. Melo takes place in August
and this year's melo will take place on 29th August to 1st September 2002 ,below
you can see the pictures taken in 2001.
Navratri Navratri
will take place on 7th of October 2002 and goes on for 10 days celebrations. Navratri
is a very colourful festival in Porbandar people wear new and colourful clothes
and jewelry. Everyone play raas and garba (traditional dances ) and pray to god.
Holika
Holi is another very popular festival in Porbandar district, best part of enjoyment
is in villages. Village called Godhana 40 minutes drive from Porbandar and around
15 km away is the place to be day after holi. Godhana is very close to the Barda
dungar (Mountain) so scenery is absolutely beautiful to describe it in more details
you have to be part of this festival. People gathers here from surrounding villages
and have folk dances and other traditional ceremonies by Maher community. This
festival takes place every year, this year it will take place on 29th and 30th
march 2002.
Porbandar Melo District
is full of festivals especially in July and august as Porbandar's biggest melo
(Fun fair) takes place right next to sea side as you can see in the Pictures below.
Melo is full of funs for everyone ,from young and old ones, poor and rich ones
every one can come and have lots of entertainment . Best thing about the melo
is that you can buy so many things as there is lots of shops especially set up
for this festival. This years melo will take place on 29th August and finish on
1st September 2002.
